Tonic Studios Mixed Media frame dies with beautiful Wings & Things butterflies.
Tonic Studios have a sale on at the moment for all their mixed media goodies - The Magnificent up to 40% off Mixed Media Sale ( UK, Eur & RoW = HERE USA = HERE) - including Nuvo Embellishment Mousse, and whilst shopping for my favourite colours, Pure Platinum, Custard Cream & Old Linen expanding mousse, I remembered that I had a mixed media project that I hadn't shared using the following Tonic Studios mixed media frame dies: Charlotte's Frame, Clementine's Glass and Cassandra's Ventana ... ooohhhh plus a couple of butterflies ...
I began by adding a layer of Old Navy embellishment mousse with a spatula - to an A4 piece of thick Craft Perfect grey board - as I didn't want a flat/smooth background. Next using Cornflower Blue embellishment mousse and an older Tonic Studios stencil, Fancy Fretwork, I added another layer of detail/texture. To blend everything together, I lightly dried brushed the whole surface with white gesso mixed with Old Linen expanding mousse.
Using all the frames from the mixed media range, I die cut each three times: twice without an aperture and once with an aperture, using Craft Perfect grey board. I layered the uncut frames on to my backing and coloured the frames with apertures identically to the background.
Then I suddenly had the idea to add the butterflies using Tonic Studios Wings & Things collection. I have die cut each butterfly from white card 3 times, layered them up which now gives the illusion of a chipboard thickness embellishment. Placing the butterflies on to the frames, along with the keys, something was still not quite right with the design/composition.
Another light bulb moment struck, and I remembered that I keep my dried but coloured kitchen towel and baby wipes. Using one of the dry baby wipes, I added a little Violet Brocade & Blue Blitz shimmer powder, wet the wipe again and dried off with my heat gun. I now had a beautiful background but the wipe felt too thick to be used as delicate butterfly wings. Grabbing my Nuvo Hybrid clear mark pad and Nuvo clear embossing powder, I covered the wipe and heat set.
Although it doesn't show in the photo, the wipe became translucent and the embossing powder brought our all the different colours within the shimmer powder. Perfect background to add to my butterfly wings.
The butterflies were now complete and added to the frames, placing the keys in their centres along with a sentiment - Tim Holtz Small Talk Sentiment Stickers.
For once and probably very rare for me, I resisted the temptation to add anything more. Yep, it was hard, very hard but am now pleased that I did as I think anything else would make the design look/appear over cluttered. What do you think? Do you agree?
Even if I say so myself, I am really quite chuffed with the soft feminine feel to this piece and now need to work out what photos to put in the frames.
Do you have a favourite colour in the Nuvo Embellishment Mousse range? Do please share and also share any projects you have made using this colour. I adore seeing how we each use the mousse in different ways.

The frames looked a little weird just placed on the backing, so I die cut some chains from 'Steam Cogs & Widgets' mixed media die set and coloured with white gesso. Whilst using the white gesso, I painted out the centre pieces of each frame to give a better indication where you would place the photos and at the same time, painted the keys - Antique Keys & Locks mixed media dies - which have also been cut from Craft Perfect grey board. The plan was to add the keys to the frames as decoration, with a sentiment ... however ... it didn't quite go ...!
