Why combine scrapbook papers & rice papers?
Scrapbook papers:
- They offer a vast array of colours, patterns & designs which is perfect for art journaling.
- Themes are already chosen for you helping break "white page fear".
- Ready made colour palate which helps tie the art journal page design.
Rice papers:
- They bring a touch of beauty to your art journal page.
- Because of their translucent nature, they allow patterns, shape and colour to subtly peak through.
- Rice papers come in a variety of texture: from smooth & silky to textural / fibrous.

Techniques for layering success
Tearing & cutting
- Tearing scrapbook papers creates a natural, organic edge. Cutting with scissors or knife means you can cut out design elements that suit your art journal page.
- Experiment with different sizes and shapes to add more depth.
Blending & layering:
- Overlap pieces of scrapbook paper & rice paper, which lets the patterns over lap each other.
- Use paints & inks to create your first colour layer using your papers as colour inspiration. This can create quick & easy highlights/shadows.
- Use paints, inks, pencils or pens to outline different features on your art journal page. These then catch your eye and become the focal point.
- Use stencils to add extra texture and design.

I hope that this post and my YouTube video are now making you reach for your scrapbook papers and seeing them in a totally new light.
Until next time, take care,
