Alcohol Ink Mixed Media Ideas: Using Tim Holtz Idea-ology Elements
In this post, I’m sharing how I’ve combined alcohol ink backgrounds with Tim Holtz Idea-ology elements to create finished cards. It’s a great way to bring together bold, fluid backgrounds with more detailed embellishments.
Alcohol inks can sometimes feel a bit unpredictable, but pairing them with structured elements like Idea-ology pieces helps turn those backgrounds into something more complete and usable.
This is a simple approach if you’re not sure how to use your alcohol ink backgrounds once they’re finished.
A Fusion of Passion:
- Alcohol inks are wonderful for making free flowing, liberating backgrounds because they are fast-drying, blendable and create mesmerizing effects.
- Pair them with Tim Holtz Idea-ology: diverse range of ephemera, embellishments, and found objects which create wonderful for mixed media/collage projects.
- Combine the two to create stunning and personalised artwork.

I really wanted to create a free, random feeling background on a large rectangle hard core art panel. I laid the alcohol inks down and "blew" them about using my alcohol ink air blower.
Once the alcohol inks were dry, I stamped on to the background using Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz Filed Notes stamp set. Then it was the fun part, rummaging through all my Idea-ology to find the pieces I wanted to layer up.
TOP TIP: once you pick your pieces, put everything else away not to distract yourself or question your choices.
