A Tim Holtz Vintage Christmas: A Mixed Media Wood Slice Project

Today, I'm excited to share a vintage-inspired Christmas project using Tim Holtz Idea-ology products. This is a recreation of a piece I made last year but with a twist ...! This mixed media wood slice combines retro pink and brown tones, with a touch of white and glitter for a truly magical look.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this project and just let the "throw it all on" attitude go to town!

Steps:

  • Prepare the wood slice: I added a thin layer of gel medium as I didn't want to take away from the roughness of the wood slice. I then added a layer of wide vintage ribbon and sprayed it with distress spritz.
  • Create the central piece: using one of the baseboards, add one of the decorate acetate layers to the back with gel medium. Next arrange some ephemera and film strip ribbon to the piece securing in place with mini staples.

  • Create a background: next using card scraps, build up some pieces to act as a rest for the decorated window base board. Add to wood slice with gel medium.
  • Make the embellishments:  I sprayed and decorated my main tree with Distress Spritz sprays: kitsch flamingo & saltwater taffy.. Added embellishments to the Santa Mug and filled a mini dome with a small tree.

  • Add the embellishments: I added a good layer of gel medium to the base and started adding my made pieces. I added more gel medium to give the look of snow everywhere and whilst wet, sprinkled glitter.
  • Finishing touches: I added a sentiment ticket, a piece of mistletoe above the beautiful paper doll image and a little bell.

Further ideas & tips:

  • Experiment with different colour combinations and embellishments to create unique and personalised projects. If I had stuck to traditional colours, this Christmas decoration would look completely different.

  • Don't be afraid to layer and add texture to your designs. I added over sized paper flowers to my tree which shouldn't work but I actually think it does!

Conclusion:

This mixed media wood slice project was a fun and creative way for me to celebrate the Christmas season in a non-traditional way. By using Tim Holtz Idea-ology products, you can create stunning and unique projects that reflect your personal style - they really do allow your creative juices to flow.

Until next time, take care,

Lou
