De-Stressing with DIY Pottery Painting

I've always love a bit of creativity, but I've been feeling a bit stuck in my usual artistic routines. I've been painting canvases, creating art journal pages, gel printing and experimenting with different acrylic techniques, but lately, I've been yearning for something a bit different.

Enter: Bisque Pottery Painting! This is just one of my recent projects and I am sharing others in my blog post!

I recently discovered the joy of painting blank bisque pottery. It's like a blank canvas, but with a tactile, 3D element. I've been using DecoArt paints, which are perfect for this kind of project. They're vibrant, easy to use, and blend beautifully.

I'm so excited to share some of my recent pottery projects. I've been having so much fun experimenting with different colours, patterns, and styles.

This cute chameleon was a blast to paint and I had so much fun adding all the dots in place with my different embossing tools. I even "Googled" what the eyes look like as wanted to give them a semi-realistic look.

I did start painting the dragon in a pink colour but didn't like how it looked. I decided to then put on another coat of paint but this time add metallic shades to it. I'm really chuffed with how the silver on the wings looks.

When I painted my tea light holder, I had visions in my head about all the dots but sadly haven't mastered the paint to embossing tool ratio very well and some of the dots became a joined up "blob"!

For my rabbit, I actually wanted the colouring to be soft and subtle - which then does seem a little strange that I added a silver metallic with white paint! I really do love the look it created in the end.

Glazing my pieces

After chatting to Jon at Personal Impressions about how I could add life to my pieces - most of the acrylic paints used have a matt finish - he suggested I try the DecoArt Triple Thick. It lives up to its name as it is indeed thick but goes on really easily with a soft brush. Another bonus for me as I can be a little impatient (!), is that it dries really quickly too.

Why I am now in LOVE with Bisque pottery painting

  • Stress relief: I found it incredibly therapeutic about focusing on creating something with no preconception of how it should look: from choosing the colours, painting techniques & using my other craft tools in different ways. It's was great way to unwind after a long day. My hubby even got involved too!
  • Endless possibilities: I didn't realise how the Bisque paint your own pottery world really is: from mugs to plates to figurines, vases to lights to huge jugs - the possibilities are endless. You can paint anything you can imagine!
  • Unique Gifts: I have now gone down the "rabbit hole" of personalised pottery makes to create unique gifts. You can customise them with names, dates, or even special messages ... that will be another learning opportunity.

In interest of openness and to stop the unnecessary gossip that is happening - yes I do work for Personal Impressions but it was my suggestion to have a "play" with making samples for them with the Bisque pottery - I really did fancy creating in a different way.

Also, none of the links in my blog post are affiliate links but genuine links. I do not earn from them!

All the different Bisque Pottery blanks can be found at Country Love Crafts and they have a huge range! I've just ordered myself a HUGE Stein jug to decorate next as I fancy combining paint with photo transfer! Steve, my husband, has been looking at all the different Christmas items and fancies having a go at painting up a Christmas Tree light!

I have mainly used DecoArt paint for these projects because I have loads of  their paints from my GelliArt DT days. However I do fancy trying with other brands now and I really want to try out crackle techniques + photo transfer, (never done this properly properly).

Until next time, take care,

Lou
