Finding Ophelia: Art Journaling with Stampanory's "Breath of Fresh Air" Collection

Hello creative souls! Today, I'm diving into the gorgeous new "Breath of Fresh Air" collection from Erica Palfrey at Stampanory, and specifically, the "Dreams" stamp set. If you've been following Erica's work, you know she has a knack for capturing ethereal beauty, and this collection is no exception.

I've been itching to get my hands on these portrait stamps since the day Erica asked me if I would create some projects with them, and when I saw the "Dreams" image, something clicked. It immediately brought to mind John Everett Millais' iconic painting, "Ophelia." That sense of tranquil surrender, the delicate features, and the suggestion of a story unfolding – it was all there in the stamp.

So, I grabbed my A4 Dylusions art journal and got to work. I carefully stamped the "Dreams" image, making sure to capture all the lovely details. I also extended the image by stamping the flowers repeatedly. Then, it was time to bring her to life with colour.

For this project, I opted for my latest acquisition, Kuretake Zig Clean Color pens. They're perfect for creating soft, watercolour-like effects, and I wanted to maintain that gentle, dreamy feel. I focused on building up layers of colour, paying attention to the subtle shading around the face and hair.

But I didn't stop there. To add depth and texture, I reached for my Prisma pencils. These are fantastic for adding those fine details and highlights that really make an image pop. I used them to define the eyes, add texture to the hair, and enhance the overall sense of light and shadow. They also helped add more detail to the water elements and give a bit of movement.

A Little Process Chat:

One of the things I love about art journaling is the freedom to experiment. There's no pressure to create a perfect masterpiece, just the joy of exploring and expressing yourself. With this page, I really wanted to capture that feeling of quiet contemplation and the hint of a story.

I've also created a short reel showcasing the process on both my Instagram and YouTube channels. I find that sharing the process is just as important as sharing the finished product. It's about inspiring others to try new techniques and find their own creative voice.

Why "Ophelia"?

The connection to "Ophelia" wasn't just visual. It was also about the emotional resonance of the image. There's a sense of vulnerability and beauty, a feeling of being caught between worlds, that both the stamp and the painting evoke.
