Transforming art journal pages into handmade cards:

Here are some simple steps to turn your art journal pages into stunning cards:

  1. Selecting the Right Pages:

Flip through your art journal and identify pages that have visually appealing elements, interesting colour combinations, or the design can be split in to card topper designs. Below is an art journal page I made using Pink Inks Heavenly Hare stamp set. When I looked back at the page, I could then see two card ideas ....

  1. Card design & shape:

When looking at your art journal page, keep in mind the size and shape of your finished card. This could be rectangular, square, or even circular cards, for example. For my first idea, I saw a DL sized card. This was by looking at the left hand side of my art journal page.

For the second card idea, I have taken the design from the right hand side as my inspiration. To me, this would make a wonderful 5" x 7" handmade card.

  1. Layering and colours:

To help re-create your designs, cover up the part of your art journal page you do not want to use. This makes it easier to see how to layer your images: stops us being distracted by the whole page. Also cut your card panel to size before stamping the design as this will help. For my first card idea, I decided, after stamping, to change the colours.

For the second card, I used the same colours that I had in my art journal page. Now I have two different shaped cards, in two different colour ways.

Creative inspiration for art journal card making:

Here are some other ideas to incorporate your art journal pages into card making:

  • Themed Cards: Create cards for specific occasions, such as birthdays, holidays, or celebrations, by selecting art journal pages that match the theme.

  • Mixed Media Cards: Combine elements from different art journal pages to create a unique collage-style card. Experiment with layering, textures, and patterns for a visually captivating design.

  • Dimensional Cards: Add depth and dimension to your cards by incorporating 3D elements from your art journal pages, such as textured paint strokes, fabric scraps, or embellishments.

If you have always thought art journaling was about mess, mixed media or abstract work, it does not need to be. They can be wonderful resource guides for our cardmaking. Think of them as extra large card toppers!
