Vellum Magic: Quick & Easy Stenciled Backgrounds for Cards

Do you ever struggle to create beautiful backgrounds for your cards? Look no further than the dynamic duo of vellum and stencils! In this blog post, I'll show you how to use this simple technique to create stunning card backgrounds in a flash.

Plus there is another card idea, again using vellum, but with the debossed side.

Vellum & Stencils: A Match Made in Craft Heaven!

A handmade card with a sheer vellum background, featuring a raised, stenciled floral pattern. The vellum is framed with a white die cut border

  • You normally see me use my stencils with inks, pastes or sprays but I wanted to share another way of using stencils. This is a great way to make a clean, quick & easy background for your handmade cards. Using a piece of vellum, I ran the Hanging Garden stencil through my die cutting maching to create a wonderful background.
  • I die cut some frames from card, 4 in total. Why so many? These will become my card front and I needed them to be really sturdy. I glued 3 together, added the vellum panel and the final die cut frame to the back to cover where I stuck the vellum in place.

  • Next, I created a panel by stamping the corner stamp from Floral Frames and colouring with my Sakura Koi water colour pens. I then cut this out.
  • On a seperate piece of card, I stamped out some extra flowers and a sentiment, colouring the flowers before cutting them out.

The butterflies & floral sprays were die cut out and coloured with inks. These are from the Ticker Tape die set.

Same idea but with a twist: using the debossed side!

A finished handmade card on a white background, showcasing a stenciled vellum background and layered floral embellishments.

  • I have created the same background using vellum & Hanging Garden stencil but have used the debossed side. The stencil imagery has now changed direction too!
  • As before I created my card front die cutting 4 frames and sticking together as described in the card above.

  • The stamped frame is the same as the previous card but I have changed the colours and added faux gems to the flower centres.
