Vellum & Stencils: A Match Made in Craft Heaven!

You normally see me use my Shady Designs stencils with inks, pastes or sprays but I wanted to share another way of using stencils. This is a great way to make a clean, quick & easy background for your handmade cards.

I have used vellum with the Shady Designs Hanging Garden stencil for the background for my stamped and die cut images. In my YouTube video, you will see that I coloured the reverse of the image using an oxide ink to give dark and light spots on the vellum background.

To secure the vellum panel in place, I have used the largest frame from Shady Designs Frame It Some More die set and then created a backing piece from a separate piece of card.

This video was made to celebrate a theme - Sunshine & Showers - and it looks at how we can still work to a theme without having crafty items that fit!

Bonus card idea

I have created the same background using vellum & Shady Designs Hanging Garden stencil but have used the debossed side. The stencil imagery has changed direction too!

To frame the flowers and outside frame, I have used the Shady Designs Butterfly Frames die set. I also decided not to colour the velum this time for a softer feel.

Beyond the Basics:

Here a few extra ideas you could do to your vellum background to change the look again:
  • Leave stencil in place and colour raised parts with the ink pad of your choice. Create multi colours by using 2 or 3 inkpad colours.
  • Again, keep stencil in place and use clear embossing ink on the raised parts. Add any embossing powder colour of your choice.
  • On the debossed side of your vellum, cover with coloured ink to create a coloured background. Use the side without any ink for your card, which will give a softer look.
  • On the debossed side, cover with clear ink and embossing powder of choice & heat set. Again use the other side to give a more muted look.
